Michelle M. Brown

Associate Professor - College of San Mateo

Michelle M. Brown is an Associate Professor and head of the Broadcast & Electronic Media program at the amazing College of San Mateo, a large community college (11,000 students) south of San Francisco (see www.smccd.edu/accounts/brownm/). She teaches studio production, digital field production, on-air talent, producing for media, scriptwriting, and Media in Society. The broadcast program is partnered with KCSM, a 24/7 PBS television and Jazz FM station.

After working in TV & video production (corporate, commercial, and agency) for ten years, Michelle attended grad school. She earned her M.A. from San Francisco State University’s Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) program, where she later worked as adjunct faculty. She has also taught at Academy of Art University San Francisco and the Art Institute of California at San Francisco. She received her B.A. from Central Michigan University’s Broadcast & Cinematic Arts department.

Selected by her college as one of two CSM Scholars, her original research into pedagogical approaches to media ethics is being supported by CSM’s Center for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. She is also an enthusiastic participant in Integrative Learning efforts, such as cross-disciplinary learning communities and collaborative learning.

Away from campus, Michelle is an award-winning director of photography and editor for a series of cinépoetry (cinematic poetry). Her work can be seen on the poet’s website (ladonnawitmer.com). In addition, she researches the classification of cinépoetry (cinepoetry.com); examining a historic film genre’s digital incarnation on the Internet. Michelle is also co-owner of Gossamer Media, a small media production and web programming company in San Francisco.

Bizarrely, people give Michelle money to say things into a microphone. She has been working as a voice talent for over ten years, willingly exploiting her voice to sell stuff like mattresses, software, underwear, cosmetics and causes. (see michellembrown.com)

Michelle is also a rabid hockey fan (Go Red Wings!), TV junkie, and doggy-mama to an incorrigible Boston Terrier named Zeus.
